Waterseal Guide

What are waterseals

There are a number of types of Waterseal product available – varying in chemistry in order to best protect different materials under different conditions. For the sake of simplicity we have described the different formulations based on the different materials that they protect

Concrete / Masonry / Grout sealers

There are main types of sealers based on their chemical makeup:

  • Acrylic – generally low cost, provide UV protection and quick to apply
  • Epoxy / Urethene – similar to acrtlics but harder waring and longer lasting, making them generally more expensive
  • Silanes – Usually provide a high performance with substances of limited porosity e.g., slate
  • Silicates – Lower cost and suitable for surfaces of medium porosity, e.g., factory floors, basements etc.
  • Siliconates – with the largest moluecular structures these are also relatively low cost and are ideal for sealing drive ways, artificial stone, mortar, etc.

In advanced waterseal products the above chemicals can be used as a mixture to a high performing protection

Roof sealers

For roofing slates silane based water seal is ideal. However, for flat roofs where pooling can become a problem, a tougher water proof membrane is usually required. Many of these products are based on bitumen, acrylics and resins suspended in solvents. They generally consist of harder wearing pastes and liquids which form semi-permanent solutions.

Applying these is usually straight forward and requires multiple layers to be applied with a brush or roller to build up the waterproofing layers
Most can be applied to most substrates although may require separate sealers and primers depending on the particular surface

Wood seal

Wood sealing products are generally formed of acrylics and resins suspended in solvents. The active ingredients should penetrate slightly further into the material to ensure there is water protection even as the top layer of wood is worn away.

In addition, aromas and colouring are often combined with the waterproofer inorder to provide a stain and “natural” smell to the finished wood
