What exactly is a damp proof course?

Damp is one of those issues that almost every house owner gets into contact at least once during their residing in a certain house. There are many factors that can contribute to the raising damp, such as the natural humidity in the area and in the ground, bridging that can happen because of the raising of the external ground level and the floor levels inside the house, or a simple failure of the Damp Proof Course . And here we come to the issue that is of interest to us in this article – the Damp Proof Course .

Namely, the Damp Proof Course , also commonly called DPC is a protective layer which is built into the walls or the floor of the house, most effectively in both of those, which protects the interior of the house from being affected by the moisture. It is made from materials that are impervious to the moisture and by including the Damp Proof Course in the fabric of the house, the raising of the damp is effectively prevented.

It has been made from materials such as lead or slate, but the newer buildings employ modern materials, such as polythene-based materials or bitumen. If you want to make sure your house is “green”, you can even get a Damp Proof Course that is made from recycled plastic. A properly done damp proof course can prevent many issues with damp and it is the most important parts of building a house that is going to be free from problems that arise from damp.
