How can tanking keep your cellars dry

Posted by Sachit Patel on June 09, 2011 (0 Comments)

People who own cellars or any other type of underground structures know how daunting it can be to get the water out once it gets in. And the reason why the water comes in, especially if this is a major issue, with significant amounts of water finding its way inside is that the proper tanking hasn’t been done. tanking is in fact a combination of measures for preventing the water from getting inside your cellar, or at least it should be.

Namely, many people think that there are miraculous ways to protect your basement from intrusion of water. There are many types of slurry and other kinds of “snake-oil” solutions that claim they will stop your basement flooding issues once and for all. This is not the case. Namely, tanking should include several elements, such as certain waterproof membranes, well-executed drainage system and inclusion of certain chemicals that will help get rid of the increased salt content that gets in together with water.

There are many different membranes and barriers that can be installed and you should choose according to your budget. The most important part is not exactly what the tanking materials are made from, but how expertly the tanking has been done. A botched tanking job can render any tanking solution useless and a good tanking job can turn a less-than-great tanking solution into a great solution.
